I might be aging myself a little bit here, but does anyone else remember when DVDs and Blu-Rays weren't around? You do? Great. Let's take ourselves back... to a simpler time. Where all movies were in the form of a bulky tape called a VHS Tape.. where if you owned a copy and someone else didn't, you could brag about it until such a time where, well... the VCR ate the tape like Cookie Monster eats his cookies. I myself had many a tape destroyed by the VCR, and I can remember my mom saying "pick another movie Brit" as she pulled the ruins out and threw it in the trash. I don't remember throwing a fit... but I can remember talking to myself after she'd left and using words I shouldn't have used back then.. such as.. "that motherfucking VCR eated my favorite movie, that's not fair..." Whenever I would get really upset, during the time my mother took a nap, I'd eat a fruit shaped bead (yes, the kind used for necklaces) just to vent my frustration. Or a tube of chap-stick.. you know, the lip smackers kind? The moon-rock one was my favorite.. or the toasted marshmallow and the only reason I remember that is because every time I see chap-stick I refuse to use it much anymore.
So, I thought maybe I'd introduce Nemo, my 5 year old sister, to a VHS tape of Toy Story this past year. I pulled it out and set up my VCR, pulled out my tape, and turned around.
Me: do you wanna watch Toy Story?
Nemo: Yeah! You have the picture box thing! Is that a toy can I play with it???
Me: .. No.. it's the case for the movie. *pulls out tape*
Nemo: No, this is! *pulls out a DVD case*
Me: This is called a video tape. A VHS.. this is from when I was little.
Nemo: Oh.... what's a VHS?
Me: a movie that comes on little tape windy thingys.. I don't know! Just watch it.
Nemo: You're still old... *flops on the couch pillows to watch*
Me: I hope it doesn't eat the tape... *hits play*
Nemo: Is it hungry?
Me: *face palms* no.. y.. yes. If i don't feed it this tape.. ju.. just watch the stupid movie.
So, for everyone out there that grew up in the time of videos not DVDs...
